General Information
The Alaska Volcano Observatory monitors the activity of volcanoes that may present a threat to the Anchorage area. Tenants may have the choice of evacuating or remaining in the building during a volcanic eruption. Weather conditions, location of the volcano, wind direction, (etc.) all play a part in determining the best action to take.
USGS recommends the following actions:
- Know what ash is and how to deal with it.
- Use dust masks, eye protection and keep skin covered. A wet handkerchief can substitute for the dust mask.
- Do not drive during and right after ash-fall as ash is harmful to vehicles.
- If you have a respiratory ailment, avoid contact with any amount of ash. Stay indoors until local health officials advise it is safe to go outside.
- Keep office equipment/machinery, etc. covered until environment is ash-free.
The buildings air handling systems will be shut down during ash-fall and will remain down until local health officials advise the air quality is safe.
